The why to the what this winter.
Or should I say non existent winter woudl be better right? Especially for us east of the Appalachians, the Upper Midwest and Western USA have been getting the goods and clobbered at times breaking cold and snow records. We did in the 2014-15 winter – get clobbered and have long cold stretches. Anyway, why has this happened? Al Q said back in late November that we’d have a cold adn snowy winter AN with 40-46″ possibly plus with a couple of blizzards. That I did and i busted badly as did almost ALL forecasts did except one – Tom Stavola known as Isotherm.
Was it Al Gore’s hex? Greta’s wishes to show she has such magical teenage powers?
No it was due to the the tropical convection that just overwhelmed the pattern that was over the warm phases of the MJO index (Marked 1 big black circle that is located just west of the international dateline.
And black curved line marked 2 the cooler/colder waters off the western area of North America.
These allowed for teh trough to be and develop more west of our area. Simple as that.
These two areas were for region 1 not as warm, orangy colors back in November and for area 2 it was much warmer. This is what we had in the great winters of 1977-78, 2013-2014-15. See so that is why I was sooooooo excited about this winter but that went bye bye after we actually started winter on Dec 21!! November and Dec leading up to this point were showing great promise and were below normal temperature – cold and above normal snowfall and ice.
So that is it in a nut shell and lastly it locked up the cold air into the polar vortex to our North over the arctic region – you can see by the deep purple – tremendously cold air.
The seas ice adn glacier has responded bigly these last few weeks to this adn grown rapidly and Alaska is getting crushed:
So three areas hurt us that we thought two would be on our side:
Tropical Convection over the Pacific Equatorial region by Aussie land
The waters off North America
Stratospheric Vortex
Miracle
40 years ago on Feb 22,1980 a bunch of young college age players took on teh world and won. It was the greatest sports moment in American history when these kids beat the Russians who had not lost an Olympic game in 20 years and beat the NHL All Stars 8-0 a month earlier in an exhibition. It changed the sport forever:
